* Erap orders crackdown vs professional squatters

President Joseph "Erap" Ejercito Estrada said Saturday some 10,000
squatter-families are up for relocation fo their own homes in a year's
time even as he ordered a crackdown on professional squatters to make
sure that only the deserving urban poor can avail of the government's
low-cost housing program. The Chief Executive said his administration
will undertake a massive clean-up and dredging of esteros and squatter
colonies vacated by the homeless as part of preparations to prevent
flooding when the expected heavy rains unleashed by La Nina pound
Metro Manila. The relocation of the squatters was also a safety
measure to keep them away from danger, including the threat of
drowning and electrocution, if their colonies are flooded, the
President said in this morning episode of JEEP ni Erap: Ang Pasada ng
Pangulo aired nationwide over dzMM and the Bureau of Broadcast
na.Tuloy-tuloy na it (Our target is 10,000 in a year's time. Once the
squatters have vacated the esteros, the DPWH will undertake dredgings,
clean-up drives, and turn these areas into concrete roads. We will
beautify these places. This will continue)." he said. President
Estrada also said he had ordered a census of squatters in the
metropolis in order to weed out the illegitimate squatters from the
legitimate ones.
