FREE VOICE-MAIL BOXES TO HELP THE HOMELESS

Walnut Creek -- A coalition of community groups is providing free
voice-mail boxes for more than 400 homeless people in Contra Costa County
to help them keep in touch with doctors, family members, and potential
employers.

People without fixed addresses or telephones have trouble getting back on
their feet because they have no way to get messages from housing
authorities, job placement centers and other agencies offering help,
according to officials at the Contra Costa Crisis Center.

Employers may not offer a job when a call to an applicant reveals he or she
lives at a homeless shelter, the crisis center said in a release announcing
the program.
