FOOD NOT BOMBS PRESS CONFERENCE AND CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE TO BE HELD AT
UNITED NATIONS PLAZA IN RESPONSE TO RECENT ARRESTS

WHO: Food Not Bombs Activists and Community Leaders speak out
against the recent arrests of FNB volunteers and incumbent mayor's
campaign against low income and homeless people

WHERE: United Nations Plaza, Market & 7th Street, San Francisco, in
conjunction with Food Not Bombs Community Meal

WHEN: Monday, October 25th, 1999 @ 5:30 pm

WHY: In response to recent arrests of Food Not Bombs volunteers for serving
free food to hungry people, and increased police activity in United Nations
Plaza targeting the homeless, as well as the incumbent mayor's unacceptable
strategy of criminalizing homelessness. Two Food Not Bombs volunteers were
arrested Wednesday October 20th for distributing soup and bread; the
food was also confiscated. Additional arrests of a server and six
others were made Friday, October 22, when FNB attempted to hand out
bread and fruit juice at the same location. Police have explicitly
stated that they will continue to make arrests of Food Not Bombs
volunteers upon any attempt to serve food to homeless people. While
politicians in the mayoral race speak of "zero-tolerance" and "quality
of life," Food Not Bombs aims to bring human rights and real
alternatives to poverty back into the dialogue.

Food Not Bombs is continuing to build community support to end the political
harassment of those who support the homeless community, and to make
criminalization of poor people unacceptable. FNB will not reduce or
restrict our servings, and we will not compromise our advocacy of the
people who are under constant attack by the government of San Francisco.
