This is *way* last minit, but if anyone's online right now ---

One of our shelter groups is writing up a proposal for a community council
group that is voting tomorrow morning on whether to allow an abandoned
building in their district to be used for Winter Response shelter.

Our experience with this particular community in the past is that they do
*not* respond to humanitarian appeals, human interest stories, public
pressure or shame. They are a predominantly business community that
responds to dollars. The reason we have a chance this time is that the
County is pulling for us, and the County is about to invest millions of
development dollars into this district.

One of the folks suggested that we beef up our proposal with some
dollars-and-cents arguments, comparing the cost of providing shelter with
the cost of jail time, hospital time, and other social costs consequent to
leaving people out on the street in winter.

I'm trying to pull some figures together. I'll check the NCH site and
other online sources; if anyone onlist has some data (& can cite sources
for it) I'd appreciate it. Contact me at anitra@speakeasy.org
