DOWNLOADING IS ON THE FEDERAL CABINET'S AGENDA!

According to Liberal MP Derek Lee, at a meeting held at Alex Girvin
Housing Co-op on Oct. the 15th, the downloading of social housing
programmes, including co-ops, is on the agenda for the cabinet meeting
scheduled for Tuesday, October 20th. Supportive Liberal MPs such as Derek
Lee and Bill Graham are urging co-op housing members and supporters to make
sure their voices are heard now.
Over the weekend (and on Monday) phone, and get your friends to
phone, the following cabinet members:
David Collenette---416-447-5544
Art Eggleton---416-638-3700
Allan Rock---416-231-2301
Sergio Marchi---416-743-3153
Jim Peterson---416-223-3858.
It doesn't matter what time you phone---you can always
leave a message.
Members of housing co-ops are asked to leave a simple message like
"Hi, I'm (XXXYYY) from Don Area Co-op. I'm opposed to the downloading of
co-op housing to the government of Ontario. I support the proposal for CHF
Canada proposal for an independent organization to administer the co-op
programmes. Please phone me at (111-1111) and let me know that your
government is not going to turn my home over to the province of Ontario to
download to municipalities."
Supporters of co-ops are asked to leave a simple message as well,
something like "Hi, I'm (XXXYYY) and I support co-op and non-profit
housing. I'm opposed to the downloading of co-op housing to the government
of Ontario. Co-ops and non-profit housing should not be turned over to a
province that is hostile to social housing. Please phone me at (111-1111)
and let me know that your government is not going to turn over co-op and
non-profit housing to the province of Ontario to download to 47 different
municipal organizations."
These cabinet members need to have an overwhelming number of
messages of support for co-op housing. Co-op housing should be the first
thing they have to respond to on Monday.
However, phoning Federal cabinet members and leaving messages on
their answering machines isn't the only way to keep having our voices
raised. Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Al Leach, the
MPP for St. George-St. David riding, needs to also be reminded that there
is strong opposition to the downloading of co-op housing to the province of
Ontario. He can be reached by phone at 416-972-7683 or fax at
416-972-7686. Leach's staff arrive should have a clear message to relay to
the Minister of Housing---co-op housing members and supporters want no part
of downloading.
(As an aside, on Tuesday, Oct. 20th at Peregrine Co-op, 18
Grenville St. at 7:30 p.m. there is a meeting for Toronto Centre-Rosedale
co-ops. For info call John Sewell at 977-5097)
