TENT CITY IS BACK

About 250 homeless people are back at ``Tent City'' in Fort Lauderdale
[Florida]. They were evacuated from the parking lot next to City Hall when
Hurricane Georges threatened. All were bused to a nearby high school
converted into a storm shelter. They got to eat, wash and sleep in air
conditioned comfort for two days until school security officials kicked
them out during the weekend.

When they were bused back to their original site they found the four huge
tents they called home were gone, along with their possessions. So they
moved into the city's parking garage until city work crews erected the
tents late yesterday. A permanent homeless shelter is under construction in
Fort Lauderdale so Tent City can be dismantled for good.
