PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Organization: People to End Homelessness

Contact Person: Catherine Rhodes

Phone: (401) 464-8520

Fax: (401) 464-8301

Providence, RI- On Monday, November 22, 1999 at 5:30 PM HOMEFRONT 2000 =
will be striking a squatters camp on the State House lawn, across from =
the new Providence Place Mall. We are here to specifically illustrate =
the outrageous and continuing "state disaster" of homelessness and the =
increasing lack of affordable housing across Rhode Island. The leaders =
of Rhode Island can find millions of dollars to build a mall, and yet =
cannot find funding to build permanent affordable housing for the =
people. Our goal is to make the citizens of Rhode Island aware the State =
has a critical shortage of affordable housing. The existing system of =
emergency shelter is full and unable to meet the demand for shelter. =
Many homeless individuals and families are being forced on to the =
streets and into other unsafe living conditions simply due to economics. =

As concerned citizens, homeless and formerly homeless, we are not able =
to comprehend how any one can be homeless in a state with such vast =
resources. The only solution to meet this housing shortage is the =
creation of permanent affordable housing.
