GAUTENG MEC HOUSING CALLS ON SQUATTERS TO VACATE LAND
JOHANNESBURG
Gauteng housing MEC Paul Mashatile on Sunday ordered members of an
informal settlement in Kaalfontein, near Thembisa, to leave the
area after they settled on land allocated for a housing development
scheme.
The squatters allegedly ignored a court order issued at the end of
last year preventing anyone from settling illegally on the land.
Mashatile called on them to co-operate with the Midland council and
the police by immediately moving out of the area and removing their
houses.
"I also urge the police and the Midrand council security to ensure
that the court order prohibiting the invasion of the land is
implemented to the fullest."
"We cannot allow 5000 families, who are in need of housing to be
inhibited when there's so much homelessness in the province," he
added.
Gauteng housing department head Mogopodi Mokoena warned squatters
to abandon their plans after they started erecting shacks on the
land on Saturday.
However, by Sunday they had not yet vacated the land.
The community was protesting against provincial government's lack
of response to two memorandums submitted by the squatters since the
court interdict at the end of last year.
One of the residents told Sapa on Saturday the Gauteng government
had "allocated the land to outsiders who are not homeless and
without money".
The land in Kaalfontein is being used by Gauteng's housing
department for the construction of 5000 houses worth R84 million.
