S H O P P E R A L E R T !

Criminalization....Sleep Deprivation...Living in Fear of Tickets or Jail
Hiding in Unsafe Places...Hypothermia...Stigma...Greater Risk of Hate Crimes
Increased Risk of Rape for Women...Medieval Cruelty...Fines the Poor Can't Pay

ALL THESE BAD THINGS COME FROM THE CITY'S SLEEPING BAN (MC 6.36)

A COALITION OF BUSINESSES called the Downtown Association (DTA)
supports this "NO SLEEP FOR THE HOMELESS" LAW.

SANTA CRUZ HAS SHELTER for less than 20% of those outside in winter and
less than 5% in summer. Yet those who provide their own shelter in
vehicles are "criminals".

SLEEPING IN YOUR VEHICLE is a $162 crime. Doing it twice in 48 hours can
get you a $1000/6-months-in-jail charge for which your vehicle can be
towed. The towing campaign is being intensified as police move to "pretty
up" the downtown for the holidays.

IN THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DO BUSINESS WITH BIGOTRY ?

The Best Gift You Can Give to the Homeless is to Restore Their Rights
Don't $upport $leepbusting $hopkeepers !

BEFORE YOU BUY DOWNTOWN, ask "Do you support the "No Sleep for the
Homeless" Law" (MC 6.36.010)? If they do or don't know, tell them you'll
return when they decide to XXsupport basic human rights. Give homeless
people a gift that really means something.

A NEW "PROGRESSIVE" CITY COUNCIL fears the editorials and cartoons of the
Santa Cruz Sentinel and criticism from downtown merchants and other
powerful conservative interests.

The Council has the votes and the power to change this law before winter
deepens, but hesitates to "move too fast" to restore the right to sleep at
night to those who live outside.
