CHIRAC URGES FRENCH TO SAVE FREEZING HOMELESS


PARIS, Nov 25 (Reuters) - President Jacques Chirac
peeled for the homeless during Europe's current cold snap and
report to the emergency services any people whose lives were
in danger.

Temperatures rose above freezing on Wednesday morning,
but France was still shocked by the deaths of eight homeless
people in recent days.

In the southern town of Beziers, near Montpellier, the mayor
signed a decree allowing municipal officials to force homeless
people into shelters when temperatures during cold spells.

``In this crucial period, every French person should feel
personally concerned,'' Chirac said in a statement. ``The
simple gesture of pointing out a person in danger (to social
workers) could save a life.'
