TOUGH KID GETS A TOP PRIZE

Indonesian film director Garin Nugroho is waiting by the phone for one
of the occasional calls he gets from his good friend Kancil, a
12-year-old Jakarta street kid. When the youngster gets in touch,
Nugroho will give him the good news - that Leaf on a Pillow, starring
Kancil and leading Indonesian actress Christine Hakim, last week won
the prestigious Special Jury Prize at the 11th Tokyo film festival.
Leaf, made in 1997, tells the unsavory story of Indonesia's homeless
kids. It's a tough life on the street, but Kancil apparently wouldn't
trade it for anything else. Hakim tried to adopt him last year, but he
returned to the streets after two months.
