You Don't Have To Buy Me Anything For Christmas

Flower Child & Zephyr (nternet@c2i2.com)
Fri, 20 Nov 1998 15:31:57 -0700

Dearest Family,

Next Friday, November 27th, I am asking everyone who wishes, to
join me in NOT BUYING ANYTHING.

You can scan this message and get the idea. The day before Buy
Nothing Day, I will be sending some reminder information.

When we can act together for an intelligent expression like this,
about overconsumption and near-meaningless lives of stressfully
buying and making things we really don't need while ignoring
nuturing our young and building decent, human-oriented loving
communities, we'll be able to continue our march to the unity
necessary to oppose the madness of our times. Here's a chance to
make a statement about our hope.

Hey, and it costs NOTHING!

Loving us and the Earth we skate thinly upon,
          your Flower Child

Subject: [bnd-list] Buy Nothing Day 1998 - latest update
worldwide

Dear fellow-BND-campaigners!

We've updated The International List of Contacts for this year's
Buy Nothing Day, includig short indications of BND-activities,
which will take place worldwide. See below!
What a creativity!!

Keep sending your information to this list!

More detailed information on the web: http://www.ddh.nl/bnd

---------------
Some Dutch news

Here in The Netherlands, the BND-campaign 'runs like a train'.
Since our press-conference last monday, where we presented the
first Konsuminderkrant (Consume Less-paper) our telephone-lines
are red hot.
The paper & Buy Nothing Day have been announced in almost all
national and regional newspapers; we already had many interviews
with newspapers, (national) radio and tv.

The Paper is (was?) available at most public libraries all over
the country. But many, many libraries keep calling us, ordering
more copies. However... we've completely run out of stock.
We feel rather overwhelmed by this success.

All this gives great pre-publicity for local groups, who are
now very busy preparing their Buy Nothing Day actions and
activities.
There will be BND-actions in at least 21 towns and cities.

And that's only the beginning.
Next week we'll start real publicity for Buy Nothing Day.

Happy campaigning to you all!

Greeting from The Netherlands,
Omslag,

Marta Resink
Dick Verheul

own
local environment on this day.
In Oslo (the capital) we will have a stand on the main avenue,
street
theatre (in three spots!), live music, hand out Fair Trade Coffee
and
home made ginger biscuits, hand out "flyers" and other
information
about BND, overconsumption, North/South-issues, "peaceful
Chistmas"
and so on...
We will try to discuss with bypassers about these themes, give
out
cards with the message "You don't have to give me any gifts this
Christmas" (the bypasser can give this card to his/her friends
and
family), and give bypassers ideas about "sustainable" Christmas
gifts.
