Biotic Baking Brigade's press release tells us that homeless sweeps in San
Francisco were a major reason they pied San Frnacisco's mayor. AP's
coverage loses that part of the story.

Perhaps the custard medium helped corporate media to cloud the protesters'
message. AP [and CNN] ate up the stroy, though, so the tactic is, at the
least, attention-getting.

DAPPER S.F. MAYOR DRESSED IN DESSERTS
PIE-THROWING PROTESTERS NAIL WILLIE BROWN

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Mayor Willie Brown was nailed in the face with an
assortment of desserts Saturday as a group of pie-throwing protesters
stepped up their campaign against -- well, against just about everything.

It was the fifth attack in four weeks by the Biotic Baking Brigade.

The group's mission is to protest environmental and social causes by
throwing baked goods.

Lucky for the usually dapper Brown, he was wearing a San Francisco 49ers
sweatsuit when the cherry, tofu cream and pumpkin pies hit him in the face
and neck.

He wiped off the mess, donned a fresh sweatshirt and carried on with his
news conference about the new football stadium.

``The mayor responded with great dignity and a sense of humor,'' said his
spokeswoman, Kandace Bender.

Brown also grabbed one of the three and held him for police, she said.

The pie throwers -- calling themselves Agent Lemon Meringue, Agent
Mincemeat and Agent After the Fall -- were arrested. Police had not
released their real names or charges by Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's attack, which activists called ``Operation Free Willie,'' was to
protest a ``skyrocketing level of evictions'' in the city and Brown's
``collusion with big businesses, landlords and developers to perform an
economic cleansing of San Francisco,'' said Al Decker, a spokesman for the
group.

Last month in San Francisco the brigade pied Nobel Prize-winning economist
Milton Friedman and Monsanto Corp. CEO Robert Shapiro.

World Trade Organization director Renato Ruggiero was hit in London by the
group, which also struck San Francisco Supervisor Gavin Newsom in the face
with a pie on election night.

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates and designer Oscar de la Renta have
also been the targets of pie-throwers in Europe.

Belgian Noel Godin's International Patisserie Brigade, pied Gates and the
Biotic Baking Brigade claims it is in alliance with the Belgians.

City and corporate officials should expect more pies coming their way,
Decker said.

``If at first you don't succeed, pie, pie again.''
