Cities Target Homeless Vendors - (HOLLYWOOD) -- The City of Hollywood is
looking to rid its busier intersections of homeless newspaper vendors who
coax money from passing motorists. The mayor says she almost hit one with
her car recently. Earlier this month, police in Weston cited six street
vendors peddling papers for the organization ``Helping People In America''.
At least three other Broward County cities have tried to chase the vendors
off their intersections citing safety concerns but they backed down for
First Amendment reasons. The editor of the ``Street Smarts'' newspaper the
vendors sell says the exercise is designed to help the homeless earn some
money and become more self-sufficient.
