Status of H.R. 3206 (updated: May 8, 1998)

As we approach Congress' Memorial Day Recess (May 22--June 1), we still have
no definitive word about when H.R. 3206 will be marked up in the House
Judiciary Committee. We have developed a national sign-on letter, and are
encouraging all members and allies of the Coalition to add their
organizational names before May 11, 1998 so that the letter can be delivered
to Committee members on that day.

As we have gotten the word out about the harmful effects of H.R. 3206, we
have received a growing number of opposition letters. This week's highlights
include opposition by the Santa Clara County (California) Board of
Supervisors , the American Planning Association and the Delaware State
Council for Persons with Disabilities.

Our continuing advice to the field is to be in regular contact with members
of the House Judiciary Committee to express your opposition to H.R. 3206 and
any similar legislation that would weaken the Fair Housing Act. Our basic
message: "The Fair Housing Act is working, and ensures equal housing
opportunity for all persons."

Fair Housing Act web site:
