A Tribute to Rosemary

I'm not sure when I met her
maybe it was 1992 or 1993.
It was at a board meeting of a
national homeless organization.
We were both new on the board.
She was a skinny little thing,
not the least bit shy,
voicing her opinions in
no uncertain terms.
Speaking out when she
felt that those who had
never experienced homelessness
were being unfair to those who
were or had been homeless.
At first I did not know what to think.
I wondered just what drove her,
why she was so bent on out shouting
those whom she felt were being unfair.
Then I really began listening to what
she had to say - she was there - she knew.
As time went on I began to listen more
and more to her
Realizing that sometimes
this group was being unfair to those
they choose to help - the poor, the
homeless, people of color.
She taught me a lot --
I learned to listen to the views
of those who were living the
experience --
I started to understand why
they were angered by the seemingly
token membership they were offered.
The frustrations that came from being
a part of a group that would not listen
to those that were living the experience.
She was a tireless crusader, and activist.
I am thankful that I had a chance to
know her even though it was short.
She made a big difference in my life
and I thank her for it.
Did she ever know the positive impact
she had on so many?
You're missed Rosemary,
Sleep in peace.
