Protected to Death

L.A. Countys child -protective agency said Debra Reid was a bad mother, so
it took away her 9-year-old son Jonathan. Six weeks later, he was dead.."

Jonathan Reid collapsed for the last time at about 1:30 a.m.

The nine-year-old boy, yanked from his mom and sentenced to foster care,
wracked by asthma and anxiety, had struggled to breathe for days. Less than
24 hours before he died, a nurse visiting the foster home had stepped up his
breathing treatments--hits from an inhaler loaded with albuterol.

He got up for another treatment, went back to bed around 1:20 a.m., then
moments later woke up screaming for a doctor. After he collapsed, paramedics
shot more albuterol down his throat and rushed him to Pomona Valley Medical
Center in Pomona, where doctors tried for more than an hour to revive him.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on June 9, 1997, E.R. doctors pronounced the boy dead.

It was the end of six months of misery, though Jonathan was not the only
child in the family to wind up in foster care.
