Drums in the park
Hi gang,
Here are some OCAP events that are coming up. On Tuesday, March 23/99,
Premier Harris will be making what we hope will be his final
pre-election Throne Speech at Queen's Park. OCAP will be there to
protest all the damage he has caused. The theme of the event is "He's
back in the Legislature-Kick off the Kick Out! OCAP will be protesting
the Harris-caused Health Care crisis, the Education cuts, the upsurge in
poverty and homelessness, and the removal of Rent Control. Meanwhile,
Harris's annual salary is a staggering $139,871.00 with a total tax cut
of $14,012.00!! This cannot go unanswered. The protest will be at
Queen's Park at 12:00 noon on March 23/99. For more information, call
Andrea, at (416) 441-3714. The e-mail is ThroneSpeechDemo@hotmail.com.
Disclaimer: (Heads up: Throne Speech date may change to Monday, March
22/99. If you're coming, it would be best to check and confirm.
The next day, March 24/99, OCAP will be protesting the annual closing
of hostel beds in Toronto. Every year around the end of March, hundreds
of hostel beds and the Out-Of-The-Cold shelters are closed for the
summer. This leaves hundreds of people out in the streets with nowhere
to go. OCAP has launched a campaign to have these beds open all year
round because homeless people die in the summer too. On March 24/99,
OCAP will be refusing to leave the shelters in the morning. Then, at
11:00 am, there will be a lunch and a rally at Holy Trinity Church,
behind the Eaton's Centre. From there, there will be a march to Queen's
Park to protest the closings. for more information, call OCAP at (416)
925-6939.
Finally, May Day is coming, May 1/99. Socialist Action will be having
their annual May Day Celebration on Saturday, May 1/99 at 7:00 pm. It
will be held at the Cecil Community Centre, 58 Cecil Street, at Spadina,
south of College. There will be music from InfraRed, live Calypso and
Reggae music and Rick Fielding, a Social Activist,
folksinger/broadcaster with CIUT-FM, a U of T radio station. Speakers
will include John Clarke, Provincial Organizer for OCAP, Joan
Grant-Cummings, President of the National Action Committee on the Staus
of Women, (NAC), Sean Cain, Co-chair, Ontario New Democratic Youth, and
NDP candidate in Oakville, Joe Flexer, Veteran activist, Canadian Auto
Workers Union, Editorial Board member of the Socialist Action, and
Joanne O'Connor, President, CUPE, Council of Toronto. The theme of the
evening is "For an NDP Government, With a Workers' Agenda". (personal
editorial note; This theme seems rather ironic considering that the NDP
is not planning to restore housing, the $37.00 beneift to pregnant
mothers or the 21.6% Welfare rate cut.)
Those are the events that are coming up. If you're in town, hope you
can make it to one or all of them. Gotta go, I'm late for a meeting. See
ya!
Bonnie
