The HIV InfoWeb has put up a searchable housing database for the state of
Massachusetts:

If you wish to recreate such a database in your own area, contact us and
we'll email you the files and simple instructions.

http://www.infoweb.org/housing/housing-search.html

Visit the URL above to try out the search. Results include maps as well as
contact information (however, not all housing locations have maps as yet)

************************************************
There is also a form which insures that the data entry will work with the
search engine.
The person doing the data entry needs to type very little; instead they
merely select items from various drop down forms, and then just hit the
"submit" button. The information is then copied from the database and
placed in a text file on the server, along with the PERL script which lets
the database be searchable.

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND ANY COMPUTER CODE TO GET THIS TO WORK. I
JUST REPLACED A FEW WORDS IN THE SETUP FILE, CREATED A FEW FOLDERS ON OUR
SERVER, AND THE DATABASE WORKED PERFECTLY.

More information about what you can search for:

What are the available housing programs
What unit sizes do they have (SROs, 1 bedrooms, etc)
What is the average time on waiting list
Available housing for people who don't have a SSN
 Housing for people recently sober
Housing exclusively for women (or for men)
Housing for people with/without open criminal cases
Housing in different regions of the state

Or Any Combination Of These Things!

Searching doesn't require any real explanation or training, just visit the
URL and try it out.
