President Clinton will release HUD's second annual State of the Cities
report today in conjunction with the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting
in Reno, NV. The report discusses progress made on several important
urban issues, including job creation, housing, crime, and education.

Although critical opportunity gaps remain in many cities, this year's
State of the Cities report also documents strong economic gains that
have led to an improved quality of life for city dwellers across the
     nation.

Copies of the 1998 State of the Cities Report are available from HUD
     USER.
