NEW YORK (AP) - An off-duty police officer was arrested today for
attempting to murder a man who tried to clean his car windows as he drove
home from a Yankee game, police and witnesses said.

Officer Michael Meyer, 28, was charged with attempted murder, assault,
reckless endangerment, and weapons possession, said Detective Mark
Patterson, a police spokesman.

Meyer allegedly shot 37-year-old Antoinne Reid in the chest at 5 p.m.
Sunday just off the Deegan Expressway in the Bronx, said Sgt. Cory Cuneo,
another police spokesman.

Reid, who lives in the Bronx, was in critical condition early today at
Lincoln Hospital there, Patterson said.

Meyer became enraged when Reid approached his car as it was stopped in
traffic about 100 yards from a highway ramp, witness Lisa Wilson told the
New York Post.

When Reid put soap on Meyer's car window and refused his request to remove
it, Meyer "grabbed Antoine by the neck," Wilson said. Meyer "pulled out his
gun and yelled 'I'll cap you! I'll cap you!' He never said he was a

Police would not comment on the cause of the dispute.

Meyer, who was treated for trauma at Jacobi Medical Center and released,
was suspended without pay after his arrest at 1:30 a.m. He has been a
police officer since 1992 and was assigned to the NYPD's building
maintenance department.

Reid's sister, Sharon Reid-Clemente, told the Post her brother used to be
homeless, but now lives with her. He earns money cleaning car windows,
pumping gas and working at a perfume factory, she said.

"Things weren't going too well for him," she said. "But he's been at that
corner for years. All the cops know him. ... He's a kind-hearted person."

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has made so-called "squeegee men" a target of his
campaign to improve the quality of life in the city.
