HUD BUDGET CUTS - The House HUD/VA Appropriations Subcommittee this week
approved an FY 2000 HUD budget that is $2 billion below the Administration's
proposal and cuts several major programs, including the public housing capital
fund, homeless assistance, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS, fair
housing, HOME, and CDBG (primarily the set-asides). The bill does not contain
any funds for new Section 8 vouchers. For a chart comparing FY 2000 to FY 99
and the president's request, see the National Low Income Housing Coalition Web
site, http://www.nlihc.org

Urge the president to issue a veto threat against the HUD/VA bill unless full
funding is restored to all the core programs that were cut. It is unconscionable
of Congress to approve almost $800 billion in tax cuts over ten years that are
financed largely through planned cuts to domestic programs such as housing, says
Center for Community Change. http://www.communitychange.org/alerts/
