HOMELESS PEOPLE MAY BE PUSHED OUT OF SYDNEY PRIOR TO OLYMPICS

A social justice campaigner says a recent increase in Newcastle's
homeless population could be part of efforts to remove
"undesirables" from Sydney prior to the Olympics.

Social justice campaigner Tim Costello, the brother of the Federal
Treasurer, has launched a homeless strategy for Hunter Mission and
says he is concerned that the number of homeless people in
Newcastle is rising.

Reverend Costello says he hopes Sydney does not follow the example
of cities like Atlanta and force homeless people out, to improve
its image for the Olympics.

"Atlanta meant many of the poor and homeless were driven out of
that city to other cities," he said.

"It would be unusual if that trend didn't recur and Sydney may see
many of its homeless and poor driven out to nearby regions like
Newcastle.

"I think the council really should be devising strategies to
monitor that."
