KOOP/RADIO PROJECT UPDATE [KOOP Radio 91.7fm in Austin, Texas] 12-7-97

"We have just made a partnership with the Austin Resource Center for
the Homeless to do 30 minutes of news a week on homeless issues. We
are donating a tape recorder and mic so they can go out into the
  streets and get the news."

Howdy all,

KOOP's News and Public Affairs Collective just had another training session
on the Radio Project. We are also setting up several people's computers
with the cooledit software this week.

We have training sessions scheduled for KOOP's Women's Collective, Austin
Resource Center for the Homeless, and the Austin Childrens On Hands Museum
all before Xmas!

We have just made a partnership with the Austin Resource Center for the
Homeless to do 30 minutes of news a week on homeless issues. We are
donating a tape recorder and mic so they can go out into the streets and
get the news.

Since my computer went down the tapes have really stacked up. I have about
20 hours of stuff from KOOP to upload. We have a Dat tape that we need to
find a way to transfer to cassette from the Zapatistas.

We are working on adopting a Zapatista radio station as a sister station to
exchange programming and we are working on a drive to get them some better
equipment.

The News programming is improving and running a lot smoother. We've
increased the quality level about 200% since we started. We came into this
newscasting with little to no experience with a daily news program but
we're doing well and are even getting calls from listeners saying they like
our news programming.

The N/PA Collective's membership is now at about 35 people and growing. The
Grassroots News Network is 13 stations strong. We just need to somehow get
everyone trained and on the Project. We are working on ways to create a
more closely knit coalition so if anyone has any suggestions please let us
know. We also need to address how to work with French, Spanish, and other
language stations. We've recently had Radio Janama in Mali, West Africa
join the coalition. Their programming is entirely in French.

We also are working on fundraising issues for the GNN. It's very hard to
raise $ for the GNN since KOOP has no funds to run our station. It's a
matter of where do we put our energy? We may have a deal worked out with
Goodwill Industries to get computers. We want Goodwill to donate computers
to several stations in the GNN in the US through the local Goodwill stores.
They have thousands of good computers nationwide. We almost have it worked
out.

We are working on a webpage for the GNN and have the basic outline done.
Check it out at http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Studio/1082/ and let us
know what you think.

We're on a roll and I'm just worried that the Xmas holidays will hamper our
progress. The N/PA Collective meets again on the 18th of this month.
