Hey, I hear you, WB! After I graduated from College last June, I I
started coming in to use their computers because I don't have a computer
at home. I was eventually told that I couldn't come in during the day
because I wasn't a student anymore. At first, I was only allowed to come
in after 5:00 pm. Then, they said that I had to buy a $25.00 Alumni card
and that I could only use one computer, a old computer that the College
bought just for Alumni students. I was lucky in that I was being paid to
make a web page for one of my groups and I was able to buy the card.
Otherwise, I would not have been able to access my e-mail or my web
page. I could go to the libraries, but it is a lottery even getting on a
computer, and the they only give you a hour to use it. You can't do
anything in an hour. So, you're right, "public" computers are not really
public. They are public only if you have money. What can we do to make
computers more accessible to the poor and homeless? If the poor and
homeless can't get computer skills, they're going to be left behind in
terms of jobs. Accessiblity for all!!
