A very good answer on questions about "Grants" that we get asked quite
often.
Please pass this to others.

For the record, I would like to clarify a few points that were brought up
recently regarding grants to individuals. Specifically, I'd like to talk
about grants to individuals given by private foundations. Private
foundations grants, for the most part, are given to nonprofit
organizations, those of the 501c3 variety, public charities. Of the more
than 45,000 such funders, less than 5000 give to individuals, mostly for
tuition assistance with strict geographical limitations. Chances of an
individual getting a grant from a private foundation are slim. If you
ever see those free cash grants ads, don't believe them. It's a scam.
The one book individuals can look at is _Foundation Grants to
Individuals_ published by the Foundation Center. One can get thru this
title in less than an hour. Once you've checked it, there is no need to
search anywhere else for private foundations giving to individuals. It
is most comprehensive.
To summarize, if you are not representing a public charity, if you are an
individual or a for-profit business, most private foundations will not
give you a grant.
