and old, poor and rich, students, scholars, and even mystery readers. Matthe=

Growney (''Library is a dumping ground for homeless,'' letter, Dec. 20) errs
significantly in indicating that we lack creativity and motivation in
responding to the challenges of serving our diverse population, including
those he describes as the homeless.

Working with the staff of the city's Emergency Shelter Commission, we have i=
n
recent months brought together providers of services to the homeless in our
community. It has been wonderful to see this developing collaboration.

A direct result of this activity has been continuing discussions as well as
the development of a training program for Boston Public Library staff
members. We are enlisting agencies that have a primary responsibility to see
to the needs of those who are hurt, tired, and sick. They are helping the
library in every way possible to continue to make everyone welcome at the
library.

We invite every idea and every resource that will help us in this important
task.
