The result of the Oregon study is chilling for people with
disabilities. Assisted suicide was sold to Oregon voters (and to the
rest of the nation) as a "last resort" answer to dying to be used only
when intolerable pain and intractable suffering cannot otherwise be
alleviated. NONE of the Oregon deaths reported in the recent study fit
into that category. Rather, the deaths were hastened over fears of
dependence and loss of autonomy, of needing help going to the toilet
and other similar issues. Of course, the media forgets completely the
reasons why asssisted suicide was passed and applaud the wonderful
working of the law. But these "dependence" and "dignity" issues are
faced by disabled people as well as dying people. Very sobering and
chilling news, in my opinion, and a prophetic sign of where things are
heading.
