SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 17, 1999 (UPI) Dozens of people rallied this morning at
San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza to protest the lack of housing for the
city's homeless. In addition, more than 200 people led by the city's
religious leaders have begun a 21-day fast to bring attention to the "dire"
housing situation.

The leaders are calling on Mayor Willie Brown to make more housing
available for the homeless in the Presidio area, and spoke out against
county officials who are cracking down on homeless people who camp out in
public areas. They said at least one city shelter was "rampant" with drug
use and an "embarrassment and an assault on the dignity of poor people."
