Hi gang,
For those of you out there who are keeping track of OCAP activities,
here is our next big action. On March 4th, 5th, and 6th, 25 OCAP members
go on trial for actions around the attempted takeover of 88-90 Carlton
Street in Toronto, near Maple Leaf Gardens. These are two abandoned
apartment buildings which are owned by an off-shore interest. These
buildings are being allowed to sit and rot while poeple are homeless on
the street. OCAP has been leading the fight to get these and other empty
buildings opened up for the homeless. In connection with that, 25 OCAP
members are facing charges such as trespass, forcible entry, mischief,
assault police, and counselling to commit an indictable offence. The
trials begin on March 4th. "OCAP is not planning to offer a defence.
Instead, they plan to attack a system that allows developers to board up
housing while the homeless freeze outside or cram into hostels. It's
Mike Harris, through cuts to Welfare and affordable housing who has put
people on the street. He should be on trial, not the members of OCAP.
Come out on the 4th and show them you back OCAP's fight for housing."
(quoted from the poster designed by Anti-Racist Action.) there will be a
pancake breakfast at All Saints Church at Dundas and Shebourne at 8:00
am. Then, there will be a rally at Old City Hall at Queen and Bay at
9:00 am. the info number is 925-6939. If you can't make it, then have a
good thought for the people on trial. I will certainly be there to offer
my support. Let's bring down Harris!
Bonnie
