PETA gives furs to homeless people

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 (UPI) _ The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
are well-known for their vehement opposition to making coats from animal
fur. Nevertheless, PETA has found a group of people they actually want to
give fur coats to: the homeless. Members of the animal rights group will be
at the Broadway Presbyterian Church in upper Manhattan today to give away
about 40 coats donated by owners who became ashamed of wearing fur.
Explains PETA President Ingrid Newkirk: ``We can't bring these animals
back, but we can send a message that only desperate people have any excuse
for wearing fur.''
