FWD Subject: DENDRITE: Protest Psychiatric Abuse of Children

DENDRITE ALERT: human rights violations in "mental health" system
February 1, 1998 - please re-distribute NOW

STOP CHILD ABUSE AT METROPOLITAN STATE HOSPITAL!

Demonstration on Sat., February 14, 4 pm
Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk (Los Angeles, CA)

The children at Metropolitan State Hospital are being held under
horrible conditions. Psychiatric survivor activist & attorney Ted
Chabasinski is leading a protest, co-sponsored by Support Coalition
International and Coalition for Alternatives in Mental Health.

Ted has personally investigated the facility as an advocate. Ted
reports that, "These kids -- mostly ethnic minorities, some as young
as nine -- are frequently put in 'restraints' (tied spread-eagled
with leather straps to a bed) for the slightest infraction."

Ted quit his job working for the state because the government-funded
"advocacy" agencies sold out, and refused to crack down on Metro. Ted
moved to LA. He put his career on the line and his life on hold for
this campaign. One reason is that Ted himself spent his entire youth
in a state psychiatric facility. He knows that this is torture.

The _Los Angeles Times_ has reported that the hospital's own
statistics show restraints are used hundreds of times a month on
these children. Many of them are heavily drugged, so that their
hands tremble, their bodies are bloated, and they fall asleep during
the day. There is little recreation for these children, and they are
locked up all day. The only outdoor space they have is prison-like
concrete patios. Break the silence now, before it's too late.

One 14-year-old with asthma was left choking and gasping for breath
after being put in restraints there. Another 16-year-old was pepper
sprayed, had a seizure, fell to the ground, and was hospitalized.

These children need love and nurturing, but all the mental health
system offers them are drugs and despair, at taxpayer expense.

Ted, who is Support Coalition International (SCI) board member, said,
"California's state hospitals, never humane to start with, are
rapidly becoming places of unspeakable cruelty. Patients languish for
years, heavily drugged and treated like subhumans, transformed into
burned-out shells of human beings whose only function is to consumer
powerful (and profitable) psychiatric drugs."
