New Update: LA FOOD NOT BOMBS ARRESTED

Here's an update on what's happened so far with LA Food Not Bombs:

7 people were arrested on Sunday the 26th (not Friday) at a LA
FNB serving in Pershing Square. This was preceded by an arrest of 1
person the previous Sunday who was quickly released with the charge
dropped after negotiations w/ Park Rangers. Some members of LA FNB met
w/ Park officials that Wednesday and were assured that there will be no
arrests.

This last Sunday, the Park Rangers were waiting for us with LAPD not too
far away. 7 people were arrested and charged with Violation of Park
Regulations. The Park Rangers insisted that FNB violated a municipal code
which requires us to have a permit.(which FNB is not required to have
since it is not a commercial business).

Most of the 7 arrested were bailed out by Monday. 1 of them had
an arraignment Monday morning who was released with charge dropped. 1
person still remains in jail waiting arraignment last I heard.

We made front cover of Metro in LA Times, live interview at talk
show on 91.7FM at 1pm and the 6 o'clock news on KPFK all on Tuesday 28th.

Although we expect all charges to be dropped, we also expect more
arrests this coming Sunday, January 2nd.

WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE TO PLEASE COME OUT NEXT SUNDAY AT 5PM TO
PERSHING SQUARE IN DOWNTOWN AND SUPPORT LA FOOD NOT BOMBS AND DEFEND OUR
RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH IN A VISIBLE LOCATION IN A PUBLIC PARK. WE ALSO
NEED HELP SPREADING THE WORD OUT TO DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES SO WE CAN HAVE
A BIG SHOWING ON SUNDAY SINCE SOME FNBers ARE OUT OF TOWN. I CAN'T
STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS. (There was absolutely no one outside of FNB
members this last Sunday!)

Here are some facts:

-We have a right to free speech in any space where a public forum is
allowed under the State constitution. The Park Rangers violated our
rights when they attempted to move us to another side of the park.
-Activities which require permits under the municipal codes don't apply to
FNB because we're not selling anything. In other words, we don't need a
permit.

WE ARE HAVING AN EMERGENCY MEETING TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY THE 29TH
AT 8PM AT THE BLACK STAR HOUSE IN INGLEWOOD. FROM 110 FREEWAY, TAKE 105
WEST, EXIT PRAIRIE(GO LEFT), RIGHT ON 104TH ST. IT'S ON THE SECOND BLOCK
ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. IT'S THE HOUSE IN THE BACK. CALL (310)673-5141
FOR MORE INFO.

PLEASE COME OUT AND HELP! WE NEED HELP WITH EVERYTHING FROM
MAKING SIGNS, MATERIALS, MAKING PHONE CALLS, EMAILS, WRITING OR SENDING
PRESS RELEASES... ESPECIALLY GETTING WORD OUT TO THE MEDIA! WE ARE
VERY SHORT ON ORGANIZERS RIGHT NOW WITH WAY TOO MANY THINGS ON OUR HANDS.

                           Love & Kisses,
                                         Soydog

ORGANIZE AGAINST POLICE OPPRESSION!
SUPPORT FOOD NOT BOMBS SUNDAY JANUARY 2ND
AT PERSHING SQUARE!

Last Friday, several Food not Bombs members and supporters were arrested for
serving food to the homeless at Pershing Square, a puplic park in downtown
Los Angeles. The Sunday before that another Food not Bombs member was
arrested at the same location for the same thing. Legal observers were
threatend with arrest unless they left the area.

The reason the city is doing this is that a private company got a permit to
set up an ice skating rink for a few months and they dont want the mostly
middle class crowd to have to be arround homeless/poor people that Food not
Bombs serves. Some people have been noticing the signs of a homeless sweep
in the park since the skating rink was set up.

The city is denying us our right to serve food to the needy just to protect
the profits of a corperation. Not only that, but they are putting people in
jail who dare to question their authority. If the police will only uphold
their motto of "to serve and protect" when it applies to the rich, then we
will have to serve (food to) and protect (the rights of) those who are truely
in need.

We need to get as many people as we possibly can to our next serving this
Sunday so get the word out any way you can. Make flyers, call your friends
and family, and pass this email arround. We need your help so please come
out and show your support.

ASSEMBLE AT 4:45 P.M INSIDE THE PARK NEAR THE CORNER OF 5TH AND HILL. IT IS
IN THE MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN
LOS ANGELES.
