Tenants Resist Evictions, Promote Rights at Annual "Homes for the Holidays"
Rally

WHO: The Cambridge Eviction Free Zone (EFZ), a member-run grassroots
organization which campaigns for permanent, affordable housing solutions
and assists tenants with immediate housing crises.

WHAT: Members will educate tenants about their rights and celebrate
housing victories. Attendees will be invited to join the chorus of holiday
carols, re-written to reflect life in an overheated real estate market,
such as:

(Sung to "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem")
"Oh little town of Cambridge, your rents shoot up so high,
Hard working families cannot pay our landlord if we try ...
Yet in the tenant movement, we have put up a fight
This profiteering has to stop - 'cause housing is our right."

WHEN: Saturday, December 18, 1999, 3 - 4 p.m.

WHERE: Carl Barron Plaza, Central Square, the corner of Massachusetts and
Western Avenues, Cambridge (Red Line to Central Square)

WHY: More than 11,000 tenants have left their Cambridge homes since the
end of rent control, forever changing the community. Often, tenants are
unaware of their rights. For years, EFZ members have helped hundreds of
tenants fight evictions and negotiate reasonable rent increases.

ABOUT EFZ: Since 1988, member-run Cambridge Eviction Free Zone (EFZ) has
worked for meaningful jobs, decent homes, healthcare, education, and equal
justice for those who live and work in Cambridge. Utilizing grass-roots
organizing, community initiatives, and legislative reform, EFZ campaigns
for permanent, affordable housing solutions, living wages and voting rights
in addition to helping Cambridge tenants respond to immediate housing
crises.
