NYC Agrees Not To Evict Homeless

NEW YORK (AP) -- The city has agreed for now to abide by
a temporary restraining order preventing the eviction of
homeless people from city shelters if they refuse work
assignments.

The plan also called for putting homeless children in foster care
if their parents were kicked out of shelters for declining work.

On Wednesday, two State Supreme Court judges temporarily
blocked the policy from going into effect, pending a January
hearing.

The city appealed, which could have allowed the policy to
move forward while the courts sorted things out. But on Friday,
a spokeswoman for the city's lawyers said they have decided to
hold off on implementing the program while the appeal is
pending.

Spokeswoman Lorna Goodman said the city is pressing
forward with its appeal, trying to convince both the State
Supreme Court and its Appellate Division that the program to
get homeless people working is a sound one.

A hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14th before Supreme Court
Justices Elliott Wilk and Helen Freedman, and supporting
paperwork is due next week in the appellate case.
