Subject: [PPEHRC]: KWRU MEMBERS FACE FELONY CHARGES FOR TAKEOVER

Tomorrow, Cheri Honkala and other members of the Kensington
Welfare Rights Union will go to court for taking over
abandoned houses this summer. They have been charged with
two felonies - criminal tresspass and conspiracy to commit
criminal tresspass. Should the court proceed with these
serious charges, a trial date will be set tomorrow.

The takeovers were part of a campaign for affordable housing
this summer. As a result of the housing takeover and tent
cities which followed, the families involved won affordable
housing. In Philadelphia, although thousands of families
are homeless and living in overcrowded conditions, there are
over 30,000 homes lying vacant or abandoned.

[Our report on the housing takeover is still available on
our webpage at <http://www.libertynet.org/kwru/updates/today1.html> ]
