Providence, RI =96 As the temperature reached10 degrees Fahrenheit this =
week, 15 homeless individuals crowded into tents seeking shelter from =
the cold on the State House lawn. It has been thirteen days since the =
group erected an encampment on the State House lawn to offer a blanket =
and tent space to those unable to find shelter.=20

Governor Lincoln Almond has ignored their plea for more emergency =
shelter beds. Delegates from the group met with a representative form =
the Governors office, but received no commitment to their current =
crisis.=20

Low-income people in Rhode Island are facing a housing crisis of =
unprecedented proportions. Yet Rhode Island=92s state government spends =
almost nothing on housing.

" In New York City, Mayor Giuliani is rounding the homeless up like =
criminals, here in Rhode Island, our Governor wants to watch them freeze =
to death on the State House lawn", says Catherine Rhodes.=20

"The shelters are full with no place for us to go", states Tim.=20

" I bet if we freeze to death, then they will open up some more =
space=92, says Maddog emphatically.

The encampment is located on Francis Street across from the Providence =
Place Mall.
