Peter Picked a Peck of Political Poems

By Ron (as told to Jeff Chase)

I.
There is no chance that your statesmen
Elected and erected above the rest below
Should act in the way we describe the also ran-
Wallowing in a pool of money that's a little shallow.
Their furniture must be made from a fabric so expensive,
A material so one-of-a-kind and terribly unique-
(I know it might be early in your breakfast of eggs and orange-ade,

But I can say more than one king has used a Nazi-style lampshade).

II.
Maybe we could try the solution of campaign finance reform
Like the unread classic of the dead white male, Plato's Republic:
Make all our guardians live together in a giant unisex dorm.
There they could enjoy Clintonian perks a la Stanley Kubrick.
Though in these very economic times that respect cash power,
Despite all our treasures we're still not sure how you keep score:

When what the Greek philosophers did now means, "no parole, forty four!"

III.
We received a letter from the President marked Priority Mail,
It had stamps and boxes just like Publisher's Clearing House.
The ex-Gov invited us to help poor Democrats with bail.
(A fundraiser forgot to put the money deep enough within the blouse).
The survey included asked if "I believe the nation is moving in the
Right direction?" Such a deep question, then they ask for a fifty.
I'm just angry that the letter was not even addressed to me-

'Twas my girlfriend wanted on the Democratic National Committee!

IV.
There must be a reason why politics is not often made
In this poem's octavian rhythm, so dependent on numerology.
Instead we have logical and wordy marinades,
To try and convince the one remaining liberal no lunch is free.
We hate listening to the conspiracy nut rant about Waco,
They should have just told us the whole rotten truth-
It was a supersecret test run by the Trilateral Commission:

An attack by a group of perverts against the missionary position.

V.
I remember my dad's first run at the high office of Council.
The voters with matches, umbrellas and combs we did shower,
At least the voter received something for the glovebox to fill.
Today it's TV we reward for broadcasting the candidates' glower.
The frenzied capitalist tries to prove that everything has a price:
Neither love nor friendship can interfere with purity of commerce.
My father won the election by giving people stuff worth a dime.

He could've risen higher if his gifts had been more sublime.

VI.
But I am not trying to bring on depression
With a list of problems that seem impossibly dire.
I do not want to break your sweet world with nuclear fission,
No need for me to muddy your impeccable attire.
The solution and way to have rulers who are just,
A ten-point plan to guarantee life, liberty and pursuit,
Is simply thus: do away with money and go back to barter.

Then I could trade Bush and two Clintons for one Jimmy Carter.

END FORWARD
