HOMELESS SUFFERERS
Your feet are sore. Socks stick
stiffly to your feet.
Your feet smell. You can't help it.
You can't help it. You can't help it.
Shivers grip you when you speak. You=92re
so cold that you can't talk.
Hands chilblained crack like your socks.
You can't help it. It's not your fault.
You have got nowhere to sleep. You have got nowhere to go.
The street - doorways, dumpsters, parks -
is your lot.
It's not your fault that you're outside
in the dark.
Today the wind blows at your ears. Days
before, rain chilled.
You shudder. You huddle. Changes throw
you among strangers.
You don't know: You can't find: You see
No one but us can find a way
Out of this damn'd cold.
Now we're facing City Hall. Something
there must be for us.
Basic rights - food, shelter, the chance
to help ourselves -
The State - this ornamented plenty - owes.
We want to belong somewhere
Again.We want to belong
To the place where we live.
We=92re not going to take this
Damn'd chill anymore. We're going
To take the chances we deserve.
