"Is there anything more ridiculous in the news today then the protests against
the World Trade Organization in Seattle? I doubt it.

"These anti-W.T.O. protesters -- who are a Noah's ark of flat-earth advocates,
protectionist trade unions and yuppies looking for their 1960's fix -- are
protesting against the wrong target with the wrong tools. Here's why:

"What unites the anti-W.T.O. crowd is their realization that we now live in a
world without walls. The cold-war system we just emerged from was built around
division and walls; the globalization system that we are now in is built around
integration and webs. In this new system, jobs, cultures, environmental
problems and labor standards can much more easily flow back and forth.

"The ridiculous thing about the protesters is that they find fault with this,
and blame the W.T.O. The W.T.O. is not the cause of this world without walls,
it's the effect. The more countries trade with one another, the more they need
an institution to set the basic rules of trade, and that is all the W.T.O.
does. "Rules are a substitute for walls -- when you don't have walls you need
more rules," notes the Council on Foreign Relations expert Michael Mandelbaum.

"Excuse me, Mr. Friedman, but I bet you are 30something. You perhaps have not
experienced being outcast in your own country. . . Some of us do not "fit in"
to HR's "criteria" to work in the U.S. Technocracy, and we have no means for
living at and around minimum wage. Check out the Homeless Network,
<http://aspin.asu.edu/hpn>http://aspin.asu.edu/hpn. Some of us with advanced
degrees and decades of working experience have become irrelevant "outsiders" in
the midst of "Boom." More and more people are homeless because HR is accepting
fewer and fewer family heads, broadly-experienced and older workers as
"willing"--At Will workers. Some of us have been fired too many times for
telling the Truth to our cynical and mercenary bosses. Some of us believe that
evasive, double-dealing and dishonest business practices are bad for business
over the long haul, globalization notwithstanding. But "anything goes" nowadays
so long as the "bottom line" "makes the goal." Some of us are "up-to-here" with
this generation's "phone-mail" that permit twit-managers, agents and
bureaucrats to evade any problem they want to evade in the phony name of
"helper," "government" and "authority." None of those agencies have much to do
with "helping" these days. They're broken themselves, so they merely give
people-in-need more lists of phone numbers to call. You have missed the point
entirely, of the WTO disturbances. This is only the beginning, because more and
more people in this nation have nothing to lose anymore and no place to go."
