homeless activist's journal

I feel like I just ran a marathon. All four folks who promised to show at
the proposal review meeting came, which was very kind. The foundation's
questions were pointed at times, and the HPN crew spoke well in our
defense. My hunch is still that the grantmaker will deny us funding, but
offer to hire a technical assistant to help us develop a management
structure.

Damn. I need rent money, and the list needs computer equipment, not expert
advice. The foundation folks seemed to think an internet discussion list
would probably not help homeless people in Massachusetts. It was like
"maybe you're not ready for funding yet".

So what do I do in the meantime? Seek other funding sources, actually.

I want to thank Sandy, who wrote a fine letter of support for us, offering
to help evaluate HPN's effectiveness at reaching our goals and my
effectiveness in working to build a list useful to members.

The foundation folks looked bored and wary to me. We'll see.

I'm glad the review meeting is over. It was a test, and we'll know our
grade by mid-month, I think. Tonight I am nearly brain-dead from the
strain of preparing for the rewiew.

There are so many homeless-run groups locally that want funds, compared
with the pool of money that the foundation has to disperse. Whatever the
foundation subcommittee recommended yesterday, I'll live with the results
and continue to do my best. In any case, all this effort is not wasted,
because it helps the list clarify our mission, and because all of us are
learning something.

Peace out.--Tom Boland
