MIKE HARRIS WAR ON THE HOMELESS CONTINUES

It was business as usual in Mike Harris' Ontario earlier today when
St. Clare's Multifaith Housing Society received official word that $800,000
was not sufficient to purchase a surplus government building to provide
housing for street youth and other marginalized people. To members of
St. Clare's this is seen as a continuation of the war on the poor that
began with 22% welfare cuts and the cancellation of thousands of units of
affordable housing.
St. Clare's is a registered charity with a specific aim of
attempting to develop co-operative housing for street youth. Initial
funding for the organization came from The Homegrown Solutions programme of
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. St. Clare's was initiated by
Toronto Action for Social Change in an effort to move from symbolic protest
to practical solutions to social problems.
On Monday, August 17th at 9:00 a.m. there will be a press
conference held at 559 Jarvis Street to mourn this lost opportunity and to
present some alternative strategies to fight homelessness in Toronto.
Supporters are welcome to join us at that time.
