FREE CALLS TO U.S. SENATE TO DEMAND ECONOMIC HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE U.S.; YOUR
CALL MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Starting April 23, Working Assets Long Distance is sponsoring an action
alert for Economic Human Rights: The Time Has Come!, a national campaign to
challenge hunger and poverty in the U.S.

Through May 1, anyone can call 1-888-38-STANDUP (782-6387) for a free
connection to the U.S. Senate switchboard (open 9am-5pm EST).

Why call your Senator?

Here in the U.S., we are accustomed to demanding that other countries
respect basic human rights, yet we have a troubled record at home. Today 30
million Americans are hungry. We have the highest rate of child poverty
among industrialized countries. And we are the only G7 country that has not
ratified the International Covenant for Economic, Social and Cultural
Rights that guarantees everyone an adequate standard of living.

On the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights during
a period of economic recovery, it is time to reaffirm the U.S. commitment
to human rights here at home by ratifying Covenant. Everyone has the right
to an adequate standard of living: that includes food, housing, health care
and social services. It's time to enforce these rights here in the U.S.

Tips for talking to congressional aides:
* Talk to her/him as though she/he is the Senator her/himself
* Be polite but be assertive
* Ask for the Senator's official position on ratifying the Covenant
* Ask them to inform you when the Senator takes a position on the issue

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE THIS MESSAGE. THANK YOU!
