Friends,

In the City of Toronto are a number of empty buildings owned by
various levels of government that can be used for community purposes,
including housing. There are community groups trying to get access to
these buildings but we are find that there is little political support
for our efforts.
St. Clare's is one of many groups attempting to gain access to these
buildings. In our case, we are attempting to purchase the former
administrative building of the Princess Margaret Hospital, a three
story building located at 559 Jarvis Street.
We are frustrated in our attempts by the local councilor and the area
M.P.P., although there has been some help provided by Al Leach, the
M.P.P. for the area, in gaining access to the proper channels in order
to have our proposal considered.
Kyle Rae does not want youth housing in his ward. His attitude is
best summed up in a headline that appeared in the March 26th issue of
Now Magazine 'KYLE RAE VS. HOMELESS KIDS'.
Al Leach, as Minister of Housing, does have the power to push for a
policy variance that would allow the government of Ontario to sell 559
Jarvis Street to St. Clare's and not have it sold off to the
for-profit sector.
We are asking people concerned about social housing to contact Al
Leach and Kyle Rae. Insist that they support the turning over of
surplus government property to community groups to meet community
needs. And, if you support our idea of using 559 Jarvis Street for
housing marginalized and homeless youth, let Kyle Rae and Al Leach
know this.
