News you can use: number of households on food stamps doubles since 2000 =

People become homeless when they can't find the support they need when =
they require it most.=20

That's why it's a disturbing sign that the number of households on food =
stamps has doubled since 2000.

It tells us that an increasing number of families are struggling to feed =
themselves.=20

But it also tell us that we need to look at the larger context. This is =
a symptom of a much larger disease.=20

The reason that a dramatically increasing number of household need food =
stamps is not because there is a lack of food in our country.=20

It is not because families are unwilling to work for the things they =
need to survive.=20

It is because there is a systemic lack of living wage jobs, adequate =
healthcare, and affordable housing.=20

And until we commit ourselves to the demands of justice--that jobs =
should pay a living wage, that all people should have access to adequate =
healthcare and be able to afford housing -- we are going to continue to =
see the symptoms of poverty fester and grow.
