Area's homeless to be counted later this month

By BERNARD BAKER

    =20

Members of a local social service group are going to be counting the =
area's homeless population later this month.=20

Several different teams will comb the area on Jan. 24 so they can =
develop an accurate database, said Ronnie Pannell, a case manager for =
the West Piedmont Better Housing Coalition Inc.=20

"We do this in order to better serve homeless individuals in our area," =
he said.=20

Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority recently received a $48,000 =
grant that will be used to identify homeless people in the West Piedmont =
Region.=20

The authority suffered a setback when a nearly $300,000 grant to provide =
shelter and care for disabled homeless people was not approved by the =
federal Department of Housing and Urban=20

Development.=20

That's another reason why these teams, which include Danville police =
officers and volunteers, will count the homeless.=20

Pannell said he thinks good work from some local churches in providing =
shelter for the homeless is keeping the population from being accurately =
reported.=20

There are churches that provide motel rooms for homeless people and =
families in need that should be counted for the survey, he said.=20

People who have been served with a 30-day eviction notice or a =
foreclosure notice also can be counted as homeless.=20

In past years, homeless people have been found living under bridges and =
in abandoned houses, Pannell said.=20

People who work in the Danville Free Clinic, local soup kitchens and =
churches that provide meals see homeless people on a regular basis, he =
added.=20
