Cold night shelter opens for homeless

      By Shorelines

About 60 homeless people received shelter and a warm bowl of chili =
Wednesday night at St. Paul's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in =
Jacksonville Beach.=20

The church is one of six at the Beaches that participate in the =
cold night shelter program because there is no homeless shelter in the =
coastal area.=20

The churches coordinate their shelter schedule with Mission House, =
a day center in Jacksonville Beach that provides meals, showers and job =
and medical assistance for the homeless.=20

Mission House Executive Director Jan Flager said he'll open an =
overnight shelter when the temperature is predicted to drop to 35 =
degrees or below. Sometimes, a church shelter will open when 35- to =
45-degree temperatures are accompanied by significant wind or rain.=20

While the number of homeless seeking shelter this week was higher =
than normal, it was less than the 80 who showed up at a church one cold =
night last winter, Flager said.=20
