PORTSMOUTH - A former resident of the Cross Roads House homeless shelter =
is the prime suspect in an investigation involving the theft and =
attempted cashing of a $2,750 check sent by the city to the homeless =
shelter.

Police Capt. Janet Champlin said that the report was taken last Monday =
and the check is believed to have been stolen right from the mailbox of =
the 600 Lafayette Road address.

Champlin also said the suspect in question is a woman who had been =
previously barred from the shelter on Jan. 25.

According to Champlin, the report was made after Chris Sterndale, =
executive director of Cross Road House, received a phone call from the =
bank stating that a woman had presented the check made out to the =
shelter and then attempted to cash it.

"A stop payment was issued on the check," said Champlin.

Given the amount of the check stolen, the nature of the crime would =
warrant felony-level charges.

She said the investigation is ongoing and detectives are using all =
resources including video-surveillance footage from the bank.

Champlin added the case is being investigated by Det. Chris Roth and =
while there is a "viable" suspect, she urged anyone with information =
about the theft to notify police.

Anyone with information regarding the case can contact the Crime =
Stoppers phone line at 431-1199, or Crime Stoppers Web site at =
www.seacoastcrimestoppers.org.
