Trio jailed for killing of tramp

A pair of Brighton teenagers who kicked a homeless alcoholic to death in =
the street have been jailed for life.
Joe Budgen and Oliver McNulty were convicted of the murder of Matthew =
Heading by a jury at Hove Crown Court - while accomplice Adam Todd was =
found guilty of manslaughter.
Mr Heading was stamped on and kicked during the brutal attack outside =
Glenwood Lodge hostel in Grand Parade on June 21 last year.=20
The incident was so horrific it brought traffic on the busy road to a =
standstill - with one witness saying the victim was booted with the =
force of a David Beckham free kick.
Yesterday Budgen, 19, of Ann Street and McNulty, 18, of New England =
Street were found guilty of the 41-year-old's murder.
Budgen must serve at least ten years before he is considered for =
release.
McNulty will spend at least eight years in a young offenders' =
institution before he can be released.
Judge Anthony Scott-Gall said both were convicted on "the clearest of =
evidence of a violent, sickening and gratuitous" attack on Mr Heading - =
but accepted they had not intended to kill their victim.
The pair were amongst five men who had gone on trial for the killing of =
the homeless Peacehaven man.
A gang of men had confronted Mr Heading and friend Joe Burton on the =
steps of the homelss hostel after an earlier row in a mobile phone shop.
The attack left Mr Heading with a fractured rib whick ruptured his =
spleen and caused internal bleeding. He was found dead in his room at =
Glenwood Lodge two days later.
Adam Todd, 26, of Ropetackle Walk, Shoreham, was jailed for five years =
after he was found guilty of the manslaughter of Mr Heading and =
assaulting Mr Burton.
Paul Hamlet, 32, of Falcon Close, Whitehawk, Brighton, was cleared of =
murder and assault.
Part way through the trial Judge Scott-Gall ordered the jury to find =
Martin Keating, 28, of Taunton Road, Brighton, not guilty of both murder =
and assault after witnesses told the court he was not at the scene of =
the attack.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Graham Pratt, =
of Sussex Police, said: "We are pleased with both the verdict and the =
sentences.
"We think it sends out the right message that the people of Brighton are =
not prepared to tolerate the type of attack inflicted on Matthew =
Heading.
"We received a lot of support and help from the street community and the =
public.
"The investigation was taken very seriously by them and we are pleased =
both for the street community and Mr Heading's family".
