      Attack unprovoked, prosecutors say

      By Alexa Aguilar

      Published July 11, 2007=20

In front of onlookers downtown late Sunday, a homeless man was =
beaten by three men with a heavy chain, a metal sign and their hands and =
feet.

And with the victim already prone on the ground, one of the =
suspects, David Romero-Sanchez, even turned back for one last kick, =
prosecutors said Tuesday.

      Romero-Sanchez, 19, and Luis Recarte, 27, both of the 4700 block =
of South Cicero Avenue in Chicago, and Erik Soriano, 24, of the 17900 =
block of South Commercial Avenue in Lansing were charged Tuesday with =
felony aggravated battery. Judge Raymond Myles ordered each held in lieu =
of $300,000 bail.

The three defendants had just left a downtown bar on Wabash Avenue =
about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, police said, when the 40-year-old victim =
inadvertently bumped into them.

The men punched and kicked him, and used a metal CTA sign and =
chain to strike him in the head, Assistant Cook County State's Atty. =
Erin Antonietti said in court.

Witnesses saw the beating and followed the three men, Antonietti =
said. The crowd restrained them until police arrived, she said.

Romero-Sanchez and Recarte are from Honduras and were staying with =
a cousin, she said. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a =
hold on both men, meaning they could be deported once the criminal case =
has been resolved. The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was in =
good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said. He =
suffered a broken facial bone and several wounds had to be stapled shut, =
she said.

Police said the homeless man did nothing to provoke the attack.
